VITAL STATS

Name: Brigitte

Metropolitan by Whit Stilman and Ratatouille (yay for rats!)

My Hello Kitty Pimp Cup, the best $6 I ever spent
by a wide margin.
Pet peeve: Spitting XP I had a boyfriend once to used to spit, so gross!
Current obsession: Dying my hair rainbow colors :D I keep changing it!

What should everyone to know about you?

That I completely overuse the word “awesome” … it’s shameful, really.

What do you when you’re not creating incredibly cool stuff for us?

Being awesome! LOL Which of course roughly translates to making things
like one of a kind art toys and dolls while getting my MA in English
Literature and solving crimes … by which I mean talking walks and
watching movies at home, lol …

Who are your favorite artists or designers?

Julie West, Thomas Han, Shag, Junko Mizuno, Alphonse Mucha, Seonna
Hong, Betsey Johnson, Tarina Tarantino, and my Andy Nukes (my Dad),
among others :D

Brigitte’s Best-selling Mermaid’s Orb Necklace

Where do you go to check out new art?

My friends, I’m not plugged into the anything hip, happening, or cool
(at least that I’m aware of) but I do have amazing friends who will
say, “Have you seen …?” or “Have you heard of …?” I also subscribe
to some great blogs run by people who are hip, happening, and/or cool
;3

How did you start doing this kind of work?

I’ve always made stuff, since I was little, I remember it being like a
rite of passage when I was allowed to use a razor blade box cutter
thing to take apart my Dad’s old copies of Architectural Digest. For
jewelery specifically I remember when I was pretty young, maybe about
ten, my Aunt and Uncle went to the Amazon in Brazil to do research
(they’re entomologists) and they brought me back all these amazing
glass beads that I made into necklaces. I think that when when I was
like, “Jewelry rules!”

Can you remember your first project?

Heck to the yes! Well, no. I’m sure there were lots of doodles, but my
first seminal creation was a zine called “Monsters Nature Land” that I
sold around the neighborhood. Published in 1986 at the tender are of
five years old … a sold out edition, thank you very much!

Who do you have in mind when you create something?

Meeeee! Actually that’s only partially a joke, I feel like I create my
best stuff when I’m just making what I want to see/wear, not thinking
even a bit about what people will and will not like, I’m not plugged
in enough to know what anyone wants but me anyway.

Where do you work?

I have a studio in my house that I work out of, it’s like a nook off
the living room, meaning there’s no door, I absolutely love it and it
has sunlight for a huge part of the day, it’s the best!

How do you go about making stuff?

No idea. I just kind of show up for it, I suppose, it just happens! I
try and sit down every day and do something though, I think it’s
important to just be in the habit, to keep it a part of every day life
instead of waiting around to be inspired, especially since I pull a
lot of inspiration from the actual mediums I work in.

Do you listen to any music while you work?

So much! Right now I’m listing to a lot of Yeah Yeah Yeahs and TV on
the Radio, but The Knife is my favorite band of all time, plus I love
Ruby, Bjork, Modest Mouse, Roisin Murphy/Moloko, Ladytron, and
CocoRosie … I could keep listing if you like, lol!

Zombukis Love You Art Book

How would you describe your style?

Eclectic? Brigitte-tastic? I love cute with a twist, an edge, I love
to bring a joy and a girlieness to things, but at the end of the day
if it’s not packed with joi de vivre I don’t want to put my name on
it.

Are you working on any new projects?

Yes! I’m prepping for a Kokeshi slash Blythe slash Urban Vinyl show in
March 2010, so exciting! I’m obsessed with painting on wood forms
right now, 3D always. For jewelry I’m on a big fanciful animal kick <3
squirrel and deer forever!

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

That I adore Shanalogic <3 you were around when I was just starting
out and believed in me, I just love you to bits!! (editors note: awwww!!)
