VITAL STATS

Name: Brigitte

Location: West Coast of Florida

Favorite food: So many!! I think Chicken and Yellow Rice with BlackBeans is way up there, but anything Cuban or Mexican will score high, especially Plantains!
Favorite movie(s):
Metropolitan by Whit Stilman and Ratatouille (yay for rats!)
Favorite accessory:
My Hello Kitty Pimp Cup, the best $6 I ever spent
by a wide margin.
Pet peeve: Spitting XP I had a boyfriend once to used to spit, so gross!
Current obsession: Dying my hair rainbow colors :D I keep changing it!

What should everyone to know about you?

That I completely overuse the word “awesome” … it’s shameful, really.

What do you when you’re not creating incredibly cool stuff for us?

Being awesome! LOL Which of course roughly translates to making things
like one of a kind art toys and dolls while getting my MA in English
Literature and solving crimes … by which I mean talking walks and
watching movies at home, lol …

Who are your favorite artists or designers?

Julie West, Thomas Han, Shag, Junko Mizuno, Alphonse Mucha, Seonna
Hong, Betsey Johnson, Tarina Tarantino, and my Andy Nukes (my Dad),
among others :D

Brigitte’s Best-selling Mermaid’s Orb Necklace

Where do you go to check out new art?

My friends, I’m not plugged into the anything hip, happening, or cool
(at least that I’m aware of) but I do have amazing friends who will
say, “Have you seen …?” or “Have you heard of …?” I also subscribe
to some great blogs run by people who are hip, happening, and/or cool
;3

How did you start doing this kind of work?

I’ve always made stuff, since I was little, I remember it being like a
rite of passage when I was allowed to use a razor blade box cutter
thing to take apart my Dad’s old copies of Architectural Digest. For
jewelery specifically I remember when I was pretty young, maybe about
ten, my Aunt and Uncle went to the Amazon in Brazil to do research
(they’re entomologists) and they brought me back all these amazing
glass beads that I made into necklaces. I think that when when I was
like, “Jewelry rules!”

Can you remember your first project?

Heck to the yes! Well, no. I’m sure there were lots of doodles, but my
first seminal creation was a zine called “Monsters Nature Land” that I
sold around the neighborhood. Published in 1986 at the tender are of
five years old … a sold out edition, thank you very much!

Who do you have in mind when you create something?

Meeeee! Actually that’s only partially a joke, I feel like I create my
best stuff when I’m just making what I want to see/wear, not thinking
even a bit about what people will and will not like, I’m not plugged
in enough to know what anyone wants but me anyway.

Where do you work?

I have a studio in my house that I work out of, it’s like a nook off
the living room, meaning there’s no door, I absolutely love it and it
has sunlight for a huge part of the day, it’s the best!

How do you go about making stuff?

No idea. I just kind of show up for it, I suppose, it just happens! I
try and sit down every day and do something though, I think it’s
important to just be in the habit, to keep it a part of every day life
instead of waiting around to be inspired, especially since I pull a
lot of inspiration from the actual mediums I work in.

Do you listen to any music while you work?

So much! Right now I’m listing to a lot of Yeah Yeah Yeahs and TV on
the Radio, but The Knife is my favorite band of all time, plus I love
Ruby, Bjork, Modest Mouse, Roisin Murphy/Moloko, Ladytron, and
CocoRosie … I could keep listing if you like, lol!

Zombukis Love You Art Book

How would you describe your style?

Eclectic? Brigitte-tastic? I love cute with a twist, an edge, I love
to bring a joy and a girlieness to things, but at the end of the day
if it’s not packed with joi de vivre I don’t want to put my name on
it.

Are you working on any new projects?

Yes! I’m prepping for a Kokeshi slash Blythe slash Urban Vinyl show in
March 2010, so exciting! I’m obsessed with painting on wood forms
right now, 3D always. For jewelry I’m on a big fanciful animal kick <3
squirrel and deer forever!

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

That I adore Shanalogic <3 you were around when I was just starting
out and believed in me, I just love you to bits!! (editors note: awwww!!)

What should everyone to know about you?

I’m a late bloomer. Always have and apparently always will. I just turned 40 this year and I’m basically starting over. I feel like I’m back in school with all the new things I’m learning everyday and I love it!

Who are your favorite artists or designers?

List is sooooo long: Murakami, Anna Chambers, Mark Ryden, Tim Biskup, Nagi Noda, Esao Andrews, Wayne Thiebaud, Trevor Brown, Junko Mizuno, J. Otto Seibold, John John Jesse, Nathan Jurevicius, Ernst Haeckel, Tokidoki, Kris Kuksi…

Citruside Print

Where do you go to check out new art?

Parlor Gallery in Asbury Park, NJ is awesome and close to my home. Arrested Motion, Sweet Station, MoCo Loco, Shanalogic (seriously!), Hi Fructose and Ektopia are regular online stops for me.

How did you start doing your craft?

I was bored and thought it would be fun to sew a plush doll. Started Cuddly Rigor Mortis, and 3 and a half years later I was exhausted but filled with creative energy that needed to come out some other way. Painting was always my first love, started when I was 11 and although I had long periods without it, I always came back. I’m thinking it may be back for good this time.

Kristen’s workspace

What do you look to for inspiration?

Anything really. Food really inspires me lately. Watching other artists work inspires me too. If I see anyone creating, I suddently have to make something too. Visiting new places inspires me too. After my husband and I went to Tokyo, I was (and still am) filled with energy from the surroundings. And that was two years ago!

Who do you have in mind when you create something?

Me. I’m completely self-centered when it comes to my art now. I always used to work for someone else, ‘will they like it?’ ‘will this person get it?’ ‘will it be acceptable for children?’ It was too much and I decided that I needed to free myself from that and be a little selfish. At least try it and it’s worked so far.

Sweet Lobotomy Print

How do you go about making stuff?

I have a sketchbook that has hundreds of little characters in it that I’ve been working on for about four months now. I’ll scan a sketch in and the plaque that I want to use and put them into Photoshop. I’ll tighten up the lines and block in colors and shading, print it out for reference and then paint the actual plaque.

How would you describe your style?

Creepy, cute, modern, low brow. I keep asking other people what they think because I’m not really sure.

Detail of Minty Melt Print

Are you working on any new projects?

I’m fleshing out some packaging designs for boxing up my prints. A box set for a series so people can have a nice place to keep them. I’m also in talks with a lovely jewelry designer about putting my artwork on some lockets. Fingers crossed!

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

I just want to say that you [ me, shana! ;-) ] were the first person to sell my plushes when no one had ever heard of Cuddly Rigor Mortis. You were also the first person to sell one of my prints and I can’t thank you enough for all the support and inspiration you’ve given me over the past few years. Shanalogic rocks!

becky

Becky of sweetiepie press (and Aitor her dapper boyfriend) dropped by the warehouse on friday to say hi (which is super-cool because they live in toronto canada)! My photos were all really blurry because the warehouse is kinda dark but I did manage to snap this cute one of Becky wearing the antique leaf hairclip and showing off her pins – cute! I wish I could have gotten a good one of them together (Itor has fabulous style!) and they are so fun together!

It’s weird how many artists I work with that I’ve never met in person! Becky is one of the original artists from my shop (back when it was PixelgirlShop) so it was super awesome to see her. If you haven’t paid attention to her pin sets in the shop, you should check them out–she’s got some really great ones including a monster pin set which was illustrated by Missy Kulik (my favorite!)
